Description

Reporting directly to the Recreation Coordinator this role is responsible for ensuring camp participants have a positive experience and for working in accordance with the Town of Caledon guidelines, practices and procedures on Recreational Programs and Customer Service Standards. 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Recreation Coordinator/Programmer with training, supervision and evaluation of summer camp staff
  • Organize and support staff in running a safe, fun and effective camp program, while ensuring ratios are met
  • Be responsible for supervision and accountability of all participants’ locations at all times and address any behavioural issues
  • Provide opportunities so that each child’s experience is positive and successful regardless of age or ability
  • Exhibit positive and professional behaviours with all participants, parents and co-workers in person, over the phone and through email communication
  • Respond to all inquiries and feedback in a positive and professional manner
  • Perform daily administrative tasks (i.e. camp preparation, Behaviour Logs, tracking documents, complete Injury and Incident reports, etc.)
  • Attend regular meetings with Recreation staff and conduct weekly meetings with camp staff
  • Coach and provide team leadership to all camp staff
  • Assist with the planning, development and implementation of camp training
  • Complete mid-term and final Performance Appraisals for Coordinators, and review all camp staff appraisals
  • Coordinate staff schedules, including Extended Day Camp (EDC), and fill in for temporary staff shortages and breaks
  • Process and submit staff timesheets
  • Coordinate facility schedules
  • Responsible for all offsite camp trips/visits logistics, including swimming
  • Organization, scheduling and staffing of additional camp activities; including but not limited to rock wall, swimming, special events and breaks

Additional duties for Inclusion Director:

  • Liaise with community agencies and partners supported by the Recreation Coordinator/Programmer and the Recreation Supervisor of Programs
  • Assisting with tasks of personal care including; changing, toileting and feeding as required (always in the presence of another Town of Caledon staff member)
  • Work directly with families to provide specific program plans to meet the inclusive/adapted requirements of participants
  • Work directly with families to complete new Participants Profiles and to update current Participant Profiles.
  • Monitor Camp registrations and ensure families receive appropriate funding
  • Assist camp staff with any behaviour challenges or concerns and ensure proper documentation is completed.
  • Assist with major incidents/injuries; including but not limited to proper documentation, following up with staff, following up with parents, and participating with Behaviour Support Plan meetings and contributing to the process
  • Organize special camp events and staff socials
  • Comply with all Town of Caledon policies and procedures
  • Submit final report to the Recreation Coordinator/Programmer with recommendations
  • Be responsible to work and ensure staff supervised work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, the Town of Caledon Occupational Health, Safety and Workplace Violence Policy and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Current certification inStandard First Aid
  • Certification in HIGH FIVE ® Principles of Healthy Child Development is an asset
  • Certification in HIGH FIVE ® Quest 2 is an asset
  • Demonstrated customer service excellence that reflects Caledon’s quality standards: accurate, courteous, responsive and easy to navigate
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to
  • Organizational skills with  and ability to meet deadlines
  • Superior interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions involving
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise significant discretion and sensitivity involving
  • Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check or vulnerable sector check
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing and daily access to a reliable vehicle
  • Experience working in a camp environment or with children is an asset; must work well with children and maintain professional relationships with parents/guardians
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook ) and knowledge of PerfectMinds.
  • Completion of a Leader in Training and/or Counselor in Training course is an asset

 Additional Qualification for Inclusion Director:

  • Bahaviour Management Systems Training
  • Experience working in a camp environment
  • Specialized training or direct work experience with children with a disability/special need.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/SETTINGS 

  • Physical activity involves active movement (ex. lifting, pulling, pushing; lifting up to 50lbs)
  • Regular travel to various town sites and external meetings
  • Regular exposure to stressful situations. May be exposed to some conflict and emotionally charged situations
  • Must be able to work after hours or when deemed necessary to meet deadlines and deal with urgent situations
  • General environment consists of various active camp locations, including indoor  and outdoor spaces
  • Must be able to accompany participants in the pool
  • Must be prepared to travel on a bus with participants and supervise off-site for trips 

Additional Conditions for Inclusion Director:

  • Must be prepared to work with participants with varying special needs, behaviours and abilities
  • Must be prepared to work in a physical active environment that includes but not limited to running, extensive walking, pushing a wheelchair or stroller, lifting participants, transferring participants and weight bearing task. ·  

 

Satisfactory passing of a vulnerable sector check, and proof of qualifications will be required of any successful candidate(s) for this position.
