The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Manager, Development & Design, this role is responsible for the overall management and guidance of all design related services (urban design and landscape architecture) at the Town of Caledon. The role will provide urban design expertise in the review of urban design matters with respect to a wide range of development applications, reviewing and providing a professional opinion and recommendation on urban design matters as well as acting as a resource for staff, Council and the public in regards to urban design. The role is also responsible for the development and implementation of design initiatives and urban design policies at the Town of Caledon. As the Senior Urban Designer, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • Leads and completes the technical review and approval of urban design material associated with development applications
  • Oversees the day-to-say supervision, management and guidance of design services including professionals in urban design, landscape architecture and external consultants
  • Coordinates, prepares and completes the updating of policies, procedures, standards and by-laws relating to urban design, built form, public realm, landscape design, community development and site development management
  • Reviews, recommends and implements process improvements and modernization for the Planning Department
  • Provides guidance and information to Committee, Council, Town staff, external agencies, and the general public regarding Caledon’s urban design policies, by-laws, standards and guidelines
  • Represent the Town at the Ontario Land Tribunal

COVID-19: In consideration of the current pandemic and Public Health orders, the Town of Caledon is providing limited in-person services as Town Hall is open to the public by appointment only. The successful candidate for Senior Urban Designer will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an enthusiastic professional with a post-secondary degree in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Architecture or closely related field and membership in the Ontario Association of Architects, Ontario Professional Planners Institute and/or related professional organization. Our ideal candidate has a minimum of 5 years related experience in the Urban Design and Planning field and a minimum 2 years of supervisory experience. We are seeking someone with experience in creating urban design policy and direction documents, generating conceptual design plans and undertaking urban design initiatives. Municipal experience is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated proficiency in the ability to generate drawings and details to communicate urban design concepts and details and Sound understanding of urban design and land use planning principles and practices. We are seeking someone with computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) and Adobe; knowledge of eScribe, Geocortex, Laserfiche, AMANDA and Bluebeam Software is considered an asset. We are seeking an individual with strong leadership and engagement skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively manage projects and think analytically and outside-of-the-box.

This position offers a salary range of $88,556.75 - $104,166.32 plus a competitive benefit package.

Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check, and proof of qualifications will be required of any successful candidate(s) for this position.
